State oil and gas company Pertamina was forced to shut down Balongan refinery in West Java due to unspecified technical fault, a company official said.

The refinery, which can process 125,000 barrels a day in its crude distillation unit, was closed at Friday morning, processing director Suroso Atmomartoyo said.

"We are investigating the problem," he said, hoping that part of the refinery might be restarted on Saturday.

The Balongan refinery accounts for about 10 percent of Pertamina's refining capacity. It supplies fuel to the capital Jakarta and West Java province.(*)
