State energy firm PT Pertamina (Persero) said it is building a globally certified sustainable aviation fuel ecosystem and preparing to enter international markets including Europe and Asia Pacific.

Speaking at the ISCC Global Sustainability Conference in Brussels, Pertamina’s Director of Business Transformation and Sustainability Agung Wicaksono said the company has secured International Sustainability and Carbon Certification across its SAF value chain, from feedstock collection to refining, storage and distribution.

Pertamina produces SAF through co-processing technology using used cooking oil at its Cilacap refinery, Central Java, with a current blend content of around 2.4%. The company has conducted technical validation tests including on an Airbus A320-200 operated by Pelita Air Services.

The company is expanding commercial scale production through the Cilacap Phase 2 biorefinery project, targeted to start operations in 2029. The expansion is expected to support Indonesia’s planned 1% SAF blending mandate for international flights from 2027 and open export opportunities.

Pertamina said Indonesia has strong potential feedstock supply from waste sources such as used cooking oil and palm oil mill effluent, which could support global SAF demand without competing with food supply.

The company aims to position Indonesia as a strategic player in aviation decarbonization while supporting its national net zero emissions target for 2060.
