State oil and gas firm PT Pertamina is studying the possibility of cooperating with other foreign oil and gas firms, including British energy giant BP Plc, PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia (CPI), a subsidiary of American oil giant Chevron Corp., and Malaysian oil firm Petronas, on aviation fuel supply in a bid to get more competitive prices.

“They are eager to cooperate with Pertamina. We are still studying the possible advantages we will gain from the cooperation,” Pertamina’s General Manager for Aviation Division Hariyoto Saleh was quoted by Bisnis Indonesia as saying in Jakarta Wednesday.

Earlier, Pertamina signed a cooperation deal on the aviation fuel supply with Anglo-Dutch energy giant Royal Dutch Shell.

According to Hariyoto, the cooperation deal with Shell is valid for 10 years, with the fuel supply focused on the Soekarno-Hatta International airport. “The fuel supply for other airports like the ones in Surabaya, Denpasar and Makassar will follow,” he added.

Under Pertamina’s business strategy plan, the company is boosting cooperation with foreign oil and gas companies on aviation fuel supply  in order to get more competitive prices.

Currently, Pertamina supplies around 2.5 million kiloliters of aviation fuel for all airports across the country through its 54 aviation fuel stations. Out of the 2.5 million kiloliters, 40 percent is supplied to the Soekarno-Hatta airport.

Hariyoto said that 80 percent of the total aviation fuel demand was met by Pertamina through its oil refineries in Balikpapan, Dumai and Cilacap. The remaining 20 percent demand is met by a company that won a tender.

Meanwhile, Pertamina’s director for commerce and marketing Achmad Faisal said that the company had also offered an opportunity for Shell to be the supplier of more aviation fuel for Pertamina on the condition that it offered low prices. (*)
