State oil and gas firm Pertamina will in 2003 give priority to the upgrading of the 125,000 barrels per day (bpd) Balongan refinery in West Java to produce unleaded gasoline, company president director Baihaki Hakim said on Thursday.

The government effective July 1,2001, banned the sale of leaded gasoline in and around the Jakarta region.

Balongan will be among Pertamina?s three downstream projects to be given priority in 2003. The other two are the Balongan-West Java and Depok-Cikampek pipeline projects, Baihaki said in a hearing with a House commission in charge of energy and mineral resources.

Pertamina said earlier it had planned to build fuel storehouses in Depok, Jakarta?s suburbs, and Cikampek in West Java. The facilities are to support fuel distribution in Jakarta and West Java. (Godang)
