Pertamina to sell geothermal power at 4.5 ? 5.0 cents per kwh

State electricity firm PT PLN had agreed to buy electricity from four geothermal power plants operating in state owned oil and gas company Pertamina’s working areas at prices ranging from 4.5 to 5.0 U.S. cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) for 30-year contract period, Bisnis Indonesia daily reported on Thursday.

The four geothermal power plants are the 15 MW Sibayak, 20 MW Lahendong Unit III, 60 MW Kamojang Unit IV and 110 MW Wayang Windu Unit II.

Director of Ground Water and Geothermal Resources at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Sugiharto Harsoprayitno said the consortium of the power plants had embarked on the final stage and they were are expected to start operating next year.

“PLN and Pertamina have agreed on the prices for the power to be supplied from the four power plants," he said.

One of the power plants, that is Wayang Windu Unit II, is operated by Star Energy.

On Feb 2007, Star Energy said it had appointed a unit of Japanese firm Sumitomo Corp. as EPC contractor to develop the power plant in West Java.

CEO Supramu Santosa told Petromindo.Com that construction work would commence this year with completion seen in late 2008. This second unit will add another 110 MW to the power plant's existing capacity of 110 MW.

Currently, Pertamina produces a total of 162 megawatts (MW) at  its geothermal power plants: 140 MW at Kamojang Unit I, II and III in West Java, 20 MW at Lahendong in North Sulawesi and 2 MW at Sibayak in North Sumatra.

Pertamina still holds rights to develop 15 geothermal working areas across the country, after relinquishing 18 of the 33 working areas granted by the government to the company in 1980s. (*)
