Pertamina told to contribute to emissions cut

Tuesday, February 22 2011 - 05:17 AM WIB

Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) president director Abadi Purnomo said development of geothermal energy by the state oil and gas company in the future would help reduce carbon emissions by 20 million tons in 2020 or 60 percent of the target set by the National Development Planning Board.

When asked how much the emissions would be priced, PGE planning and development manager Zainal Ilmie Bachrun said the company would offer the program and choose the potential buyer of the carbon emissions cut.

The company will pick a country that quotes the highest price, he said.

He said PGE had registered itself with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Zainal said 1 ton of carbon was sold at 5-10 euros.

The Kamojang geothermal power plant which generates 60MW will save 350,000 tons of carbon per year. (Giok)
