The House of Representatives (DPR) has asked the state owned oil and gas company Pertamina to settle its debts of about Rp8.5 trillion to the government in three years, Kompas reported on Wednesday.

During a meeting with Minister of Finance Budiono, the House's special committee in charge of the state budget proposed the rescheduling of Pertamina's debts so that the company would be able to repay it in three years.

To be able to settle the debts, Pertamina would be also allowed to sell its assets.

"But, before the scheduling of the debts, the government would first conduct an audit on how such big amount of debts took place," the spokesman of the committee, Soekardjo Hardjosoewirdjo said.

In the meeting, the House's special committee also agreed to disburse Rp2.7 trillion in escrow account of Pertamina as the payment of the fuel subsidy for 2003 fiscal year, which totaled Rp3.2 trillion. (*)
