PT Pertamina Tongkang, a unit of state owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina, has renamed itself into PT Pertamina Trans Kontinental as a part of its transformation drive to become a bigger and better carrier.

President Director Suherimanto said the company is on the rise, as reflected in the Rp26.1 billion profit it booked in 2011 (unaudited) of the Rp22.4 billion target, with this year?s profit target standing at a whopping Rp92 billion.

The firm therefore, he added, found it necessary to change the name it has held since its establishment 42 years ago to help improve the firm?s image. ?All these times, Pertamina Tongkang is considered as a carrier that only has tongkang (traditional, small ship). This image-changing is necessary as we want to become also a top player in domestic shipping industry, even a global player,? he said.

At present, the company operates 50 vessels, comprising of tug boats and oil barges, Anchor Handling and Tug Supply (AHTS) ships, small tankers and others. ?In the future, the firm will operate medium vessels and even VLGCs (Very Large Gas Carriers),? said Suherimanto.
