PT Pertamina Patra Niaga (PPN), the fuel trading arm of state-owned energy firm PT Pertamina, said its production of smooth fluid (SF) used in oil-based drilling mud rose nearly 35% in 2025 to more than 180,000 barrels, driven by strong demand from upstream oil and gas activities.
Output increased from 134,000 barrels in 2024, PPN Corporate Secretary Roberth M.V. Dumatubun said in a statement, adding that the growth reflected rising use of domestically refined products in drilling operations.
Smooth fluid is a key component in oil-based drilling mud, which is used to control subsurface pressure, lubricate drilling equipment and maintain well stability.
PPN produces three variants — SF-02, SF-04 and SF-05 — tailored to different operational requirements. The most widely used products in 2025 were SF-04 and SF-05, Roberth said.

SF-04 is produced at the Cilacap refinery, while SF-05 is manufactured at the Balikpapan and Dumai refineries.
Roberth said the increase in production demonstrates that domestic products can compete with imported alternatives and meet international standards. The use of locally produced smooth fluid also contributes to higher domestic content levels, known as TKDN, in the oil and gas sector.
He added that SF-04 is non-corrosive and resistant to oxidation, allowing for longer storage and safe use in drilling equipment. SF-05 features a high flash point and low pour point, which enhances operational safety and reduces fire risks. The product is biodegradable and suitable for both offshore and onshore drilling operations.
PPN said the development of SF-04 and SF-05 forms part of Pertamina’s broader strategy to strengthen national energy security and reduce reliance on imports, while also opening potential export opportunities.
