Pesona Khatulistiwa to commence coal production in 2009

East Kalimantan coal miner PT Pesona Khatulistiwa Nusantara (PKN) said on Thursday it planned to commence commercial operations in 2009.

 

The company’s Project Coordinator E.S Mayo told Petromindo.Com that the mine would be set to produce at a flat rate of 1 million tonnes per annum in the first few years. He said that the company would undertake trial mining in the second quarter of 2008 with the volume of 60,000 tonnes.

 

PKN is currently developing the first pit, which is located in the northern part of the concession area.

 

PKN is currently negotiating with trader called Petrocom to offtake most of coal production from the mine. PKN is also negotiating with a power developer in Gorontalo province with the potential to supply 150,000 TPA under long-term contract.

 

PKN will produce coal with CV range from 4,400-4,600 Kcal/kg.

 

PKN will utilize Ansam river port that are currently being developed and to be completed in the second quarter of 2008. Coal production would be transported from the port to transshipment point using 8,000 tonnes-capacity barges.

 

PKN, a third generation CCoW holder, has coal resources of 181 million tonnes. The mine is located in Bulungan regency. (denny)
