Petrochina plans to increase investment in the Indonesian upstream oil and gas sector by applying enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology, Investor Daily reported on Wednesday.

Vice Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Rudi Rubiandini said that Petrochina has proven experience with the application of EOR technology in Daqing, China.

?We plan to apply this technology in Indonesia so as to help increase the national oil production which has been declining,? Rudi said. He said that the EOR technology will be applied in cooperation with PT Pertamina EP to help increase the production of oil fields operated by the subsidiary of state-owned oil and gas firm Pertamina.

But there is a possibility also that the technology will also be applied in other development fields, he added.

Rudi said that Petrochina, Pertamina, and upstream oil and gas regulator BPMIGAS will soon hold talks on how to realize the plan.

BPMIGAS Chief Raden Priyono welcomes the Petrochina offers. ?Aside from the application of the EOR technology, Petrochina has also expressed interest in managing coal bed methane block,? he said.

Meanwhile, Pertamina Vice President for Corporate Communication Ali Mundakir said that the company has dispatched a special team to China to study the Petrochina EOR technology. (*)
