The Bukit Tua field in Ketapang PSC in East Java operated by Petronas Carigali Bhd started production on Sunday, upstream authority SKK Migas announced on Tuesday.

During its maiden operation, the field produced 3,700 barrels of oil per day (bopd) and 2 mmscfd of gas.

?Gradually, the production will increase to 20,000 bopd and 50 mmscfd in 2006,? SKK Migas? Chairman Amien Sunaryadi said in a statement.

The gas is purchased by PT Petrogas Jatim Utama, a regional state owned enterprise (SOE) owned by the East Java provincial administration. The gas will be used for power generation.

Petronas Indonesia?s General Manager Hazli Sham Kassim said the Bukit Tua field project is thus far the firm?s largest project in Indonesia. ?Petronas invested US$800 million for the project,? he said.

The field is located offshore, 35 km north of Madura Island and 110 km of northeast of Gresik city in East Java mainland. Production at the field is supported by various facilities including a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel called Ratu Nusantara (connected to Bukit Tua platform) which has a processing capacity of 20,000 bopd, 70 mmscfd of gas and 20 barrels of water per day. Besides, the vessel is able to containing 630,000 processed crude. It is connected to an Offshore Receiving Facility (ORF) in Gresik by a 110-km pipeline. The gas is delivered through the pipeline, while its oil will be transported to export markets using tanker vessels.

Ketapang PSC is 80 percent owned by Petronas Carigali Ketapang II Ltd, 20 percent by PT Saka Ketapang Perdana, a subsidiary of state owned gas distributor PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN).
