State oil and gas company PT Pertamina has officially invited Malaysian state owned oil and gas company Petronas to take part in the development of an oil refinery plant in Tuban, East Java, Suara Karya reported on Thursday.

Pertamina’s director for downstream operation, Harry Purnomo, said in Jakarta on Wednesday that the invitation was conveyed during a meeting with Petronas’ executives in Kuala Lumpur recently.

“Petronas has warmly welcome the offer. We hope the company will be able to form a joint venture with Pertamina and Iran National Oil Company (NIOC) to develop the oil refinery project,” he said.

Harry said that Petronas and Pertamina would soon meet to further discuss the possible involvement of the Malaysian company in the refinery project.

The Iranian company said earlier that it planned to build a refinery plant in Tuban with total investment of about US$1 billion. The plant will process crude oil from Iran with a capacity of 150,000 barrels per day. (*)
