PGE uncertain about production target

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energi (PGE) president director Abadi Purnomo has expressed doubt the company would be able to complete its geothermal power plant projects as 60 percent of its concession areas are located in protected, conservation, production forest areas and national parks.

Difficult terrain, lack of infrastructure and unpredictable issuance of licenses have also slowed down the realization of the projects that have a combined capacity of 1,342 MW, Abadi said during a hearing with the House of Representatives' Commission VII, which also involved state owned electricity firm PT PLN.

He added that the company had set a target of producing 272 MW by the end of 2010, but only 202 MW was met from Lahendong, Kamojang and Sibayak geothermal fields.

In 2014 production is projected to reach 457 MW thanks to completion of Ulubelu plants unit 1, 2 and 3, with a capacity of 55 MW each in 2012, 2013 and 2014 respectively. (giok)
