State owned gas transmissin and distribution company Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) hopes the construction of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminal could begin in 2009 and be completed in 2012, Investor Daily reported on Monday.

The company's president WMP Simanjuntak said in Jakarta last weekend that the construction of the LNG receiving was one of the company's several projects to cope with the sharp increase in the gas demand in Java which was projected to reach between 2.5 billion and 3 billion cubic feet per day by the year 2010.

He said that the company had not decided whether it would build the receiving terminal in Central Java or in East Java because the study on the financial details of the planned LNG terminal was still underway.

"But most likely, the receiving LNG terminal will be built in East Java to support the operation of the East Kalimantan-East Java gas pipeline which will begin operation in 2009," he said.

PGN received a grant of about US$350,000 to finance the feasibility study of the planned LNG receiving terminal. "The general survey for the project had been completed. We will then carry out a survey related to details of the financing and the operation of the LNG receiving terminal," he said. (*)
