PGN's president W.M.P Simanjuntak said in Jakarta on Wednesday that in the first stage, the company would build 10 gas stations along the Pantura route, the main route linking major cities in Java.
"The 10 gas stations which will be designed for intercity public buses, will be in operation in 2008," he said, adding that the location of each gas station will be about 100 kilometers from the others.
According to him, each gas station will have a capacity of 5,000 standard cubic meters, while the gas will be supplied from a gas field in Senoro-Tolli, Central Sulawesi in the form of compressed natural gas (CNG).
Meanwhile, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro said that the use of CNG for vehicles was introduced in Jakarta several years ago but it was not yet popular among motorists because a converter that has to be installed to enable a car to use the gas fuel is still too expensive.
State oil and gas company PT Pertamina announced recently that it had raised the price of CNG from Rp 700 per liter, to Rp 1,550, starting Nov. 29.
The compressed natural gas proves to be a better choice to fuel vehicle’s engines. It produces fewer pollutants than using conventional gasoline fuel. (*)
