PGN to raise gas price in E. Java next January

Tuesday, November 19 2002 - 03:02 AM WIB

State-owned gas transmission and distribution firm PT PGN will increase the price of natural gas in East Java next January, to Rp1,600 (US$=Rp9,025) per cubic meter from the current price of Rp1,400, Bisnis Indonesia daily reported on Tuesday.

Trijono, general manager of the East Java office of PGN, was quoted as saying that the increase would be imposed only on consumers who required up to 100 cubic meters of gas monthly like restaurants, hospitals, hotels and pharmacies.

The price increase was due to the raise in the gas price from production sharing contractor PT Lapindo Brantas, which operates gas fields in East Java, Trijono said.

East Java has faced acute natural gas supply shortage over the past months due to a fall in gas supply from the Pagerungan fields off the East Java coast, operated by Anglo-American energy firm BP Plc. Gas reserves in the fields have depleted. (*)
