Philippines to import coal from Indonesia

The Philippines will probably import coal from Indonesia to meet the coal needs of a new steam power plant, which is now under construction in the country,Investor Daily reported on Thursday.

The neighboring country's keen interest to buy coal from Indonesia was unveiled by the former Philippine president Fidel Ramos during a meeting with Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro.

Ramos asked Purnomo the possibility of procuring coal from Indonesia to feed a steam power plant which was currently being built in Mindano. The power plant with a capacity of 200 MW is expected to begin commercial operation in 2009.

During the meeting, Ramos who was accompanied by the Philippine ambassador to Indonesia, also offered a possible cooperation in the construction of power plants in North Sulawesi.(*)
