State-owned mining holding company MIND ID President Director Maroef Sjamsoeddin said gold, as a strategic commodity, should be given top priority in Indonesia’s economic development. He said the absence of small-scale mines in the formal supply chain and their limited access to LBMA-compliant refining facilities reduce state revenue. “Besides having high economic value, gold is also an asset that forms part of a central bank’s international reserves. Therefore, gold has the potential to become a strategic asset supporting the country’s foreign exchange reserves and Bank Indonesia’s requirements,” Maroef said at MINDialogue 2026: Minerals for Economic Stability in Indonesia, on Aug. 13.
