State-owned electricity firm PT PLN has assigned its subsidiaries PT Pembangkitan Jawa Bali (PJB) and PT Indonesia Power (IP) to develop a combined 6,000 MW capacity of mine mouth coal fired power plants, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Monday.

The paper quoted PJB President Director Iwan Agung Firstantara as saying that the mine mouth coal-fired power plant projects are located in Kalimantan and Sumatra.

?PJB and IP have been assigned by PLN (to develop mine mouth power plants). There are a number of regions assigned to us (PJB), we?re still looking for partners,? Iwan told the paper, adding that the company is looking for both domestic and foreign partners including from China.

IP President Director Sripeni Inten Cahyani said her company is also looking for partners to develop the mine mouth power plant projects. She said that IP will team up with IDX-listed coal giant PT Adaro Energy Tbk in the development of 2x300 MW PLTU Kaltim-5 mine mouth coal-fired power plant project in East Kalimantan. She said that the project will be located in one of Adaro?s coal concessions. IP will hold 51 percent of the estimated US$180 million power plant project.

Sripeni said that the company is looking to soon sign a power purchase agreement with PLN for the planned project.

Under its 2017-2026 electricity procurement business plan (or RUPTL), PLN is envisaged to procure total capacity of 7,000 MW of mine mouth coal-fired power plants. (*)
