State-owned electricity firm PT PLN said that several power plant projects in Sulawesi region with combined capacity of 635 MW are slated to start operation within the next few months and next year.

?There are many still at construction stage. In the near future, around 635 MW will start operation,? said General Manager of PLN South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi and West Sulawesi (or Sulselrabar) region, Bob Saril to Petromindo.com on Tuesday.

He said that in October of this year, a total of 65 MW of diesel-fired power plants scattered in a number of areas such as Telo, Pare-pare and others, will start operation. In November the unit 1 of the 1x100 MW PLTU Punagaya coal-fired power plant will start operation, while the second unit is projected to begin operation in March of next year, also with capacity of 1x100 MW.

?And there are PLTGU Jeneponto owned by Bosowa Energy with capacity of 1x125 MW which will also be operated in November, and the unit 2 with same capacity in March 2018,? he said.

At the end of this year, the PLTU Mamuju with capacity of 2x25 MW will also start operation. The PLTB Sidrap 70 MW wind power plant is targeted to start operation in March 2018.

?Sulawesi holds huge potential for electricity produced from clean energy. Almost 30 percent of electricity in the region comes from renewables,? he said.

Bob said that the additional power supply from the new projects will bode well for efforts to lure fresh investment into the region. Electricity supply in Sulawesi region currently stands at 240 MW, with reserves margin of 24 percent.
