PLN assigned to develop four geothermal working areas

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources is expected to issue by the end of this year the ministerial decree on the assignment for state-owned electricity firm PT PLN to develop four additional geothermal working areas (WKPs).

?Evaluation of work program from PLN regarding the assignment is in progress, such as technical data, timeline and funding. If everything goes well, at the end of this year the decree will be given (to PLN),? said Yunus Saefulhak, Director of Geothermal at the ministry to Petromindo.com on Monday.

He said that the development of the geothermal working areas will be adjusted to electricity demand in Indonesia.

The four additional WKPs are WKP Ungaran in Semarang, Central Java Province, with power generation potential of 100 MW (development plan 55 MW), WKP Borapulu, Central Sulawesi, with power generation potential of 123 MW (development plan 40 MW), WKP Oka Illiange in East Nusa Tenggara with electricity generation potential of 40 MW (development plan 10 MW), and WKP Sirung in East Nusa Tenggara with generation potential of 125 MW (development plan 10 MW).

PLN currently has six WKPs including in Ulumbu, Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggra Province, with generation potential of Manggarai of 40 MW, Mataloko, Ngada Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, with generation potential of 20 MW, Tulehu Maluku Tengah Regency, Maluku, with generation potential of 60 MW, Ciater in Subang Regency, West Java, with generation potential of 60 MW, Atadei in Lembata Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, with generation potential of 10 MW, and Songa Wayaua in Halmahera Selatan Regency, North Maluku Utara, with generation potential of 10 MW. Total investment for the six WKPs is estimated at US$640 million.
