PLN begins operation of coal-fired power plant in N. Maluku

State-owned electricity company PT PLN on Monday officially started operation of the second unit of the Tidore 2x7 MW coal-fired power plant in Tidore Islands, North Maluku Province.

News portal Kompas.com quoted Haryanto, Director of PLN?s Maluku and Papua regional office, as saying that the power plant will increase power supply in the Tidore and Ternate areas.

He said that the Tidore power plant forms part of a number of power plant and supporting facilities to be developed by the government in North Maluku.

Haryanto said that the government plans to spend up to Rp 10 trillion over the next five years to bolster the electricity capacity in North Maluku including by developing a combined 200 MW power plants, and transmission lines. He said that the planned new power plants include 10 MW in Sofifi, 10 MW in Tobelo, 5 MW in Malifut, 20 MW in Bacan, and 15 MW in Sanana. (*)
