State-owned electricity firm PT PLN estimated coal demand for its coal-fired power plants this year at 85 million tons, lower than the 92 million tons estimate set under the 2016-2025 electricity procurement business plan (or RUPTL).

This was revealed by Head of Coal Division at PLN Harlen to Petromindo.com on Tuesday.

He explained that the downward revision in the coal demand estimate was made due to lower economic growth assumption this year. When the RUPTL was formulated, the country?s economic growth this year was projected at 8 percent, while the growth projection now is around 5 percent.

Last year, PLN consumed around 74 million tons of coal.
