State utility PT PLN will convert the diesel fuel power plant (PLTD) with a capacity of 3 Megawatt (MW) in Bawean, East Java, into a gas engine power plant (PLTMG).

To secure gas supply for the power plant, PLN will soon open a gas tender to supply a total volume of 0,6 millions standard cubic feet (mmscfd).

"There have been four companies interested in supplying the gas to the PLTMG in Bawean. We just want to get a small volume, around 0,6 mmscfd. That?s enough for the gas power plant,? PLN?s Fuel Oil and Gas Division Head, M.Suryadi Marjoedki told Petromindo.com in Jakarta on Thursday.

He said that the conversion to PLTMG was part of PLN's plan to gradually diversify its primary energy sources away from the more expensive oil fuels for all the power plants across the country.

As part of the plan, PLN has also planned to build gas-fired power plants in Aceh, North Sumatra, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. Nasri Sebayang, Construction Director of PLN, recently said that the power plants were designed to cover power requirement in the provinces and ease the burden off distribution network specially during peak loads .

As a number of the power plants will use CNG, PLN is also developing CNG facilities. It has started the construction of CNG storage facilities near the Sei Gelam 1 gas well, which has a production capacity of 2.5 billion British thermal unit per day (bbtud), in Jambi.

Nasri also said that PLN planned to convert between 30 and 50 bbtud of gas from the Terang Sirasun Batur fields offshore East Java, operated by Kangean Energy, into CNG. The field was scheduled to supply 150 bbtud of gas to PLN in May 2012.

The company has also signed a cooperation contract with Italian consulting company RINA, which will construct a marine CNG distribution system to transport CNG from Gresik in East Java to Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara.
