State-owned electricity firm PT PLN inaugurated on Monday operation of six units of diesel turbine, each with capacity of 1,000 kW at the PLTD Sei Bilal diesel-fired power plant in Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan Province.

PLN said in a statement that the capacity expansion of the PLTD Sei Bilal is made to increase the reliability of the power system in Nunukan, the country?s border with neighboring Malaysia.

PLN said that the additional capacity, equal to 6 MW, increases the load capacity in the isolated Nunukan power system to 17 MW from 11 MW, with peak load of 10.5 MW, thus allowing greater room for PLN to provide power to new customers including industries.

PLN Director of Business for Kalimantan Region, Machnizon Masri said in the statement that new power plants are being developed in Nunukan to further increase capacity, including additional capacity of 2 MW on Sebatik Island expected to come on stream in 2018, and the operation of a 10 MW of gas engine power plant in 2020.
