Electricity consumption is expected to surge this year as businesses are increasingly confident of the country?s economic prospect, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Friday.

The paper quoted Benny Marbun, Head of Commercial Division at state-owned electricity firm PT PLN, as saying that electricity consumption in the country this year is projected to increase by 11.4 percent to 225 terawatt hour (TWh) from 202 TWh last year.

He said that this is a significant growth in consumption as growth last year was only 2.2 percent from 194 TWh.

Of the total 202 TWh electricity consumption last year, about 35 percent came from industries.

The expected surge in electricity consumption this year comes after the government in October last year announced incentives for industries to help accelerate economic growth including tariff discount and ease of payment. (*)
