PLN expects coal requirement to increase 9%

State-owned electricity company PT. Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) expects its coal requirement this year to increase by 9 percent to 78.5 million tons from 66.3 million tons last year as new coal-fired power plants start operation.

Helmi Najamudin, Head of the Coal Division at PLN, was quoted by Kontan Monday as saying that as of the first quarter of this year, the company has consumed about 17.5 million tons.

He said that PLN?s include Adaro Indonesia, Arutmin Indonesia, Kideco Jaya Agung, Kaltim Prima Coal, Bukit Asam, Lana Harita, Jorong Barutama, Dwi Guna Laksana, Batara Batari Sinergy Nusantara, and Kasih Industri Nusantara.

Helmi said that the two largest suppliers are Adaro and Arumin.

He said that new coal-fired power plants which start operation this year include Pangkalan Susu (2x200 MW) in North Sumatra, Singhe (16.5MW) in Belitung, Nagan Raya (190 MW) in Aceh, Tenayanraya (2x100MW) and Indragiri Hilir (14MW), both in Riau.

The company is also developing new coal-fired power plants in Papua, North Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, and West Java. (*)
