State electricity firm PLN said it was scouting to acquire several subituminous producing coal mines as part of the company’s strategy to ensure coal supply for its power plants.

CEO Eddie Widiono told reporters that the mines that PLN eyeing are medium scale mining, but did not give further detail.

PLN will need some 30 million tonnes of coal per annum when its 10,000 MW coal-fired power plant would be completed in 2010-11.

The company’s subsidiary PT.Indonesia Power, which runs Suralaya 3,400 MW power plant already has a coal trading JV called Artha Daya Coalindo, which helps Suralaya to procure spot coal requirements. (godang)
