State-owned electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) signed an MoU on Monday with China Shenhua Energy?s Guohua Electric Power for the expansion of the Simpang Belimbing coal fired power plant in South Sumatra.
PLN said in a statement that under the plan, Guohua Electric Power will develop a new mine-mouth power plant with a capacity of up to 600 MW.
PLN President Director Nur Pamudji said that following the MoU, an 8-month feasibility study would be carried out, after which further details about the project would be available.
He expected, however, that if the Chinese investor agrees to proceed with the project, it could be completed in 2018 to help increase electricity supply in South Sumatra amid growing demand.
Guohua Electric Power has previously built and operates the first 2x113.5 MW Simpang Belimbing coal-fired power plant.
