PLN has 600 MW surplus electricity for Java and Bali islands

After having faced the threat of power crisis on islands of Java and Bali for several years, state-owned electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) is now able to have a surplus of 600 megawatts of electricity reserves even at the time of peak consumption, the Kompas newspaper reported in its Monday edition.

This situation will continue until next year?s dry season, when PLN will be forced to close down several hydro electricity plants due to lack of water in reservoirs, PLN president director Eddie Widiono told reporters on Sunday after attending a ceremony marking the National Electrical Day in Jakarta.

The better power supply was possible because of additional supply from gas-fired power plant at Muara Tawar.

The additional supply from Muara Tawar began in April 2004. The plant, which was built by Siemens, generates 800 MW. (*)
