State electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) has opened a beauty contest for the expansion of Paiton 3-4 coal fired power plant project worth US$800 million or Rp 7.2 trillion participated in by Paiton Energy Company (PEC) and PT Java Power.

The Beauty contest which kicked off on February 22 will run through April 23, 2007.

Head of the team of the government?s power crash program Yogo Pratomo said in Jakarta Thursday that when the beauty contest is over, the two bidders will propose bidding price, offering lowest power price to PLN on April 30.

Yogo said that the power price to be on offer can either be above 0.045 U.S. cents per kWh or above the price set by the ministerial decree no. 044/2006 on private power selling price issued by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

He asserted that the timeline for the Paiton 3-4 coal-fired power plant expansion project is 30 months, with the power plant expected to come on stream in December 2010.

?Winner of the tender for the expansion of Paiton 3-4 coal-fired power plant project will be announced on May 14. After that, they will sign power purchase agreement (PPA) on August 14, 2007,? he said.
