State-owned electricity firm PT PLN held a ceremony on Friday for the official operation of the 150 kV Kijang sub-station and high voltage elevated transmission line on Bintan Island, Riau Islands Province, further strengthening the Batam-Bintan interconnection system.

PLN President Director Sofyan Basir said in a press statement that the new facility will allow the company to serve additional 2,422 new customers.

He added that the full operation of the Batam-Bintan interconnection system, which was inaugurated in October of last year, and linked with the Kijang sub-station in August of this year, will allow the company to save cost of Rp 11.46 billion per month, as the electricity from the existing diesel-fired power plant and leased gas fired power plant in Bintan will be gradually replaced with power supplied from the Batam-Bintan interconnection facility.

According to the statement, the new power supply from the interconnection facility will increase power capacity in Bintan from the current 115.30 MW to 180 MW. (*)
