The power system in South Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan (Kalselteng) will get additional power supply in the near future from the coal-fired power plant (PLTU) Pulang Pisau Unit-2 at the capacity of 60 Megawatt (MW).

State utility PT PLN said in a press release issued on Tuesday that the PLTU Pulang Pisau Unit-2 is currently undergoing a final test before commercial operation. Its Unit-1 has been made in operation previously at the same capacity.

The PLTU is being developed with a total investment of Rp1.9 trillion in Buntoi village of Kahayan Hilir district in Kuala Kapuas regency, Central Kalimantan.

The company said that the additional power will automatically strengthen the power system in Kalselteng, which has now had a total capacity of 550 MW with peak load at 530 MW. With the additional power from PLTU Pulang Pisau Unit-2, the total capacity will rise to 600 MW.

The new power plant which has been also in operation is the gas-fired power plant (PLTMG) Bangkanai with capacity of 155 MW. With the finalization of the 150 kilo Volt (kV) transmission from the substation of Bangkanai to the substation of Muara Teweh, and to substation of Buntok, the gas-fired power plant can supply an additional of 47 MW to the city of Muara Teweh in Barito Utara regency and Buntok city in Barito Selatan regency.

PLN has been also accelerating the development of the 150 kV transmission connecting Buntok and Tanjung in Tabalong regency. If the transmission finalized, then the power from PLTMG Bangkanai can enter the interconnection system of Kalselteng.

?The additional power supply will automatically strengthen the ability of PLN to fulfill its commitment to supply power up to the remote areas,? PLN?s Kalselteng Regional General Manager Purnomo said.

He said that until now, PLN had managed to provide power to 27 villages in South Kalimantan, and six villages in Central Kalimantan through its program of power for villages. By the end of this year PLN will provide power access to other 28 villages in South Kalimantan, and other 51 villages in Central Kalimantan.
