State owned utility firm PT PLN has been offered to operate and provide maintenance services to newly-built gas fired power plants in Iraq.

The offer was made by Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Hussain Ibrahim Saleh Al-Shahristani, during his visit to Indonesia early this week.

?Iraq is building a number of power plants because of most of power plants in the country have been damaged during the war. They need the people to operate and maintenance the new power plants,? Director General of Electricity at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, Jarman, said.

Jarman said that Iraq was currently building a number of power plants with a capacity of 9,000 MW to increase the existing production capacity of 2,300 MW, or only 25 percent of the country?s power plant capacity before the war.

Through its subsidiary, PLN has been involved in the operation of power plants in Saudi Arabia.

?PLN has experiences and expertise in the construction and operation of gas-fired power plants. Currently, PLN is building several gas-fired power plants. Some of its power plants which have total capacity of 30,000 MW are gas-fired power plants,? Jarman added.

Meanwhile, PLN President Director Nur Pamudji confirmed that the Iraqi government had invited PLN to be involved in the operation and maintenance of power plants in the country. But he did not elaborate.
