State electricity firm PT PLN would sign a power purchase agreement (PPA) with a consortium led by Japanese firm Marubeni Corp., that will develop of a 600 MW coal-fired power plant in Cirebon, West Java, early July this year, Koran Tempo reported on Thursday.

South Korea’s companies Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd and Sam Tan Co. Ltd and Indonesian engineering firm PT Tripatra are members of the consortium.

Under the agreement, PLN will buy the electricity to be produced at the power plant at 4.36 U.S. cents per kWh with the coal price US$30 per ton.

Director General of Electricity and Energy Exploitation J Purwono said in Jakarta on Wednesday that PPA would be signed in a ceremony where the Pacitan coal-fired power plant in East Java will be also launched.

“The contract may be signed early July 2007 in the presence of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono,” he went on.

The power plant is expected to commence commercial operation in 2009. (*)
