Media Group, state electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) and  Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) provincial administration have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to construct a 2x200 MW coal-fired fired plant in West Aceh regency in a bid to solve the power crisis in the province, Media Indonesia reported  Monday.

The MoU was signed by NAD Governor Irwandi Yusuf, Irsan Gading representing Media Group and PLN’s director of power plant Ali Herman Ibrahim in Banda Aceh on Saturday.

Under the plan, PT Energi Alam Raya will handle the construction of the coal-fired power plant.

On the occasion, they also agreed to set the selling price of power sold to PLN at Rp 450 per kwh, higher than that previously agreed at Rp 350 per kwh.

“Aceh has been facing power shortage of 100 MW. Hopefully, with the construction of the coal-fired power plant in West Aceh regency, the electricity power facing Aceh can be soled,” said Ali Herman Ibrahim.

Media Group had earlier made a commitment to build a coal-fired power plant with a capacity of 15 MW in Nagan Raya Regency. The power plant now under construction is expected to start operation in 2010. (*)
