State-owned electricity firm PT PLN said on Sunday it has started operation of a new diesel-fired power plant (PLTD) with capacity of 6x200 kW on Selat Nasik Island, Belitung Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands Province.
PLN said in a statement that the operation of the new plant has increase electricity supply reliability on the island, allowing it to enjoy power supply for 24 hours a day. Previously, the island?s 2,162 power customers, who are mostly fishermen, could only enjoy power supply for 12 hours a day, creating difficulties in developing cold storage facilities for the local fishermen.
PLN expected the expanded power capacity will encourage new investment in cold storage facilities on Selat Nasik Island.
PLN said it has previously set up 10 diesel-fired power plants in small islands in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province to increase power supply.
