PLN plans 855 MW of new power plants in Papua, Maluku

State-owned electricity firm PT PLN plans to procure a total of 855 MW of gas engine power plants (PLTMG) in Papua and Maluku regions in the period of 2017-2019.
PLN Business Director for Maluku and Papua regions, Haryanto WS told Petromindo.com over the weekend that a combined 460 MW will be built in Papua and West Papua provinces, and another 395 MW in Maluku and North Maluku provinces.
He said that some of the power plant projects are scheduled to start operation this year. The PLTMG mobile power plant, with capacity of 50 MW, in Papua province?s Jayapura is targeted to be completed in September of this year as construction progress has now reached 70 percent.
Haryanto said that in the Papua region, around 265 MW are projected to start commercial operation next year, and 145 MW in Maluku region. Some of the projects are still under procurement stage, while others are still in the phase of letter of intent (LoI) such as those in Papua region including the PLTMG Biak 1 with capacity of 15 MW, PLTMG Merauke 20 MW, and PLTMG Jayapura Peaker 40 MW. In Maluku region, projects under LoI status are PLTMG Ambon Peaker 30 MW, PLTMG Langgur 20 MW and PLTMG Seram 20 MW.
He said that the power plants will initially run on marine fuel oil, but will later switch to gas from the Tangguh LNG project in West Papua and the Masela block project in Maluku. ?Power plant projects in the eastern part of Indonesia are focused on gas-fired because the presence of Tangguh and Masela,? Haryanto said.
According to PLN?s calculations, the company will need as much as 180 mmscfd of gas in 2018. About 20 mmscfd will be required for 100 MW power generation. The company is still calculating its gas requirement for 2019 in the Papua and Maluku regions.
