State-owned electricity firm PT PLN plans to build gas-engine power plants to replace 11 power plant projects which have been suspended to help increase electricity supply in the country.
The 11 suspended projects were part of the 34 stalled power plant projects announced by the government recently. Of the total, 11 were declared to be really suspended or discontinued, 17 to be continued as their progress has reached around 80 percent, and the remainders are still being negotiated by PLN and the investors, according to Head of Corporate Communications at PLN, I Made Suprateka.
Suprateka said on Wednesday that developing gas-power plant is faster than other type of power plants. He pointed out as an example that it would only take about 1.5 years to complete a gas-engine power plant, compared to 2-4 years for coal-fired power plants to complete.
He added that another relatively quick alternative to improve power supply to customers is by building new transmission lines and sub-stations.
