State-owned electricity firm PT PLN plans to develop electricity towers in Java and Bali to support the Java-Bali overhead transmission line for the supply of power from Java to the island of Bali, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Wednesday.

The paper quoted Achmad Ismail, a manager at PLN, as saying that preparations are being finalized to hold tender for the electricity tower project, which is designed to have a height of 376 meters, and 2,169-meter-long-span, which could be the world?s tallest electricity pylons if realized. The world?s tallest currently stands in China at 346 meters.

The power consumption in Bali currently stands at about 750 MW, of which 340 MW is supplied via the Java-Bali undersea cable, while the remainder from diesel-fired power plants on the island. The target is to reduce supply of electricity from the diesel-fired power plants, by increasing the supply from Java via the planned overhead transmission grid, the paper said. (*)
