The East Java distribution office of the state electricity firm PLN has proposed the use of micro power generating facility to anticipate the possible power crisis in 2002.

Head of the East Java distribution unit Budi Harjanto was quoted as saying by the Neraca daily that the micro power generation was relatively cheaper compared to constructing huge power generation unit, which could cost US$1.5 billion each.

He also said that the micro power was more efficient because it used water to generate power and was also free of maintenance during the first five years.

Speaking to reporters during a recent gathering at the East Java distribution unit, Budi said that he had make a presentation of the micro power technology in front of the PLN board of directors.

He also said that such technology had been used in Malaysia and so far there had been no complaints.

He said that by using 4,000 micro power generating units, the power produced would cost around 7 U.S. cents per Kwh. He said that to lower the price to half, PLN must buy a greater number of the micro power generating units.

Entry to Central Java

Elsewhere, Budi said that PLN had been making preparation to expand its customer base in the Cilacap and Semarang ports in Central Java.

He said that the company had previously signed MoU with the state-owned port authority PT Pelindo III which has authority over ports in East Java and Central Java.

He said that the entry of the East Java distribution office into the Central Java area was in line with the PLN policy to liberalize the power sector in the future through the "multi buyers multi sellers concept."

He also welcomes the Central Java office if it would penetrate the East Java area.

He said that the office plans to penetrate other areas in the country. (*)
