PLN ready to sign 12 private coal-fired power plant projects

State electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) said it is ready to sign a cooperation agreement with private power plants this month on 12 private coal-power power plant projects targeted to start operation in 2009 or 2010 under the government?s fast track program.

?The projects include those to be conducted in critical areas and others to be carried out under partnership scheme,? PLN?s president director Eddie Widiono said in Jakarta Tuesday.

According to Eddie, the construction of all of the private power plants with total capacity of 2,104 MW is projected to solve critical power supply outside Java.

The construction of power plants in critical areas is possible selected through direct appointment, he said.

Under the ministry of energy and mineral resources regulation, the electricity price produced by private power plants ranges from 4.5 cent US$ per kWh to 4.95 cent US$ per kWh.

Eddie said that several power plant projects in several areas hit by power supply crisis have entered construction stage to solve the power supply problem.

In North Sumatra, power plants projects now under construction are Labuhan Angin coal-fired power plant, Asahan hydro power plant Asahan and Sibolga coal-fired power plant. Meanwhile, three power plants are also being constructed in South Sulawesi, They are Bosowa coal-fired power plant, Jeneponto coal-fired power plant and Bone coal-fired power plant.

Meanwhile, director general for electricity and the energy utilization of the energy and mineral resources ministry J. Purwono said that PLN has to make sure that all of the contractors that will be involved in the construction of private power plants already hold tentative electricity business license. (*)
