PLN, Rumanian firm to build power plant in Kalimantan

State owned electricity company PLN will tie up with a Rumanian company to build a steam power plant in Asam Asam, Central Kalimantan, as part of efforts by PLN to help resolve the power shortage problem in the province, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Tuesday.

PLN?s president director Eddie Widiono Suwondho said in Jakarta on Monday that the construction of the power plant which would have a capacity of 2 x 50 MW and would use coal as its fuel would cost about US$90 million.

He did not name the Rumanian partner.

"The project will be jointly financed by Bank Mandiri and a Rumanian bank," he said, adding that the memorandum of understanding (MOU) agreement on the joint construction of the power plant was signed during the visit of President Megawati Sukarnoputri to Rumania last week.

He said that the new power plant was expected to start commercial production between 2006 and 2007. (*)
