PLN?s 2007 fuel consumption soars on gas supply shortage

Tuesday, September 25 2007 - 01:59 AM WIB

State electricity firm PLN expects this year?s fuel consumption to jump to above 10 million kiloliters, far above bugeted consumption of 7.6 million kiloliters, accompany official said on Monday as quoted by Media Indonesia daily.

Deputy director Tonny Agus Mulyantono said the jump in consumption was due to decrease in gas supply to its major combined-cycle power plants including Cilegon, Muara Karang. Tanjung Priok and Gresik power plants all are located in Java, forcing PLN to use fuel oil.

The condition was also made worse by coal supply problems at its coal-fired power plants due to bad weather condition earlier this year.

PLN, he said, is planning to cut its 2008 fuel consumption to just 6.6 million kiloliters and converting HSD fuel to cheaper MFO by modifying its power plants.(*)
