PLN?s workers hold demonstration to oppose divestment plan

Monday, October 27 2003 - 04:39 AM WIB

Around 300 workers of state electricity company PLN held a demonstration at the House of Representatives on Monday to oppose any plan to privatize its units.

The protesters said the government?s policy of regularly raising electricity tariffs showed its determination to divest PLN?s units to foreign investors.

Some officials of PLN admitted earlier that some its workers might have to laid off if its units were privatized.

However, PLN president director Eddie Widiono said over the weekend that his company had not made any plan to divest its units like power producers PT Indonesia Power and PT Pembangkitan Tenaga Listrik Jawa-Bali.

Eddie admitted that divestment would be good for PLN because it could ensure transparency at the company and prevent outside intervention. (godang)
