Power supply crisis in Indonesia has decreased slightly but the situation would no doubt get worse again if new power plants are not built, the president director of state electricity company PLN, Eddie Widiono, said on Wednesday.

?At the macro level, the condition of Indonesia?s electricity sector is getting better,? Eddie told reporters after attending a meeting at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

Eddie was quoted by Suara Pembaruan daily as saying that the number of areas facing serious shortage of electricity supply had dropped to 23 from 28.

Eddie said rotating blackout still occurred in several provinces like East Nusa Tenggara.

He further said his company had used certain amounts of funds to reduce the acute shortage of electricity supply in many parts of the country.

Eddie said recently PLN would likely allocate around US$400 million in 2003 so as to hire-purchase power generators. (*)
