PLN says prolonged drought may trouble Java-Bali power supply

Monday, August 11 2003 - 10:14 AM WIB

State electricity firm PLN said Monday power supply of the Java-Bali system remained normal amidst fears about further drop in water supply for power generators due to prolonged drought.

?Power supply of the Java-Bali system is in normal condition. But, the situation will be dangerous if drought prolongs,? Eddie told reporters as reported by Detik.com news website.

If dams in Java and Bali receive less and less water in the coming months, PLN?s hydro power plants in the area no doubt will not function normally. This will force the company to optimize the operation of its fuel power generators, which means that PLN will have to spend more money on fuel.

PLN?s power plants and those operated by other power producers together have capacity to supply the Jawa-Bali system around 12,800 megawatts (MW) of electricity, of which some 2,536 MW are supplied by hydro power plants.

Meanwhile, power demand from in the area reaches 13,250 MW. (*)
