State-owned electricity company PT PLN (Persero), through its West Kalimantan Main Distribution Unit (PLN UID West Kalimantan), has officially signed the Commercial Operation Date (COD) for the 1 x 5 megawatt (MW) Kuala Mandor Biomass Power Plant (PLTBm) owned by PT Pundi Global Investama (PGI). The signing marks the integration of the renewable energy facility into the West Kalimantan power system and represents a key milestone in accelerating Indonesia’s national energy transition.

The COD signing ceremony was held on Wednesday (Dec 31). Located in Kuala Mandor A village, Kuala Mandor B subdistrict, Kubu Raya regency, the Kuala Mandor biomass power plant has completed construction and is ready for commercial operation.

PLN UID West Kalimantan Senior Manager for Planning Anton Sugiarto said the plant uses direct combustion technology with an installed capacity of 5 MW. The project was developed under an Independent Power Producer (IPP) scheme using a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) model with a 20-year concession period.

“Electricity generated by the Kuala Mandor biomass power plant is transmitted through the 20-kilovolt medium-voltage network of the Korek feeder–Ambawang substation–Tayan, thereby strengthening the reliability of power supply in West Kalimantan,” Anton said, as quoted by Pontianak Post.

The development of the biomass plant aligns with PLN’s 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), which positions new and renewable energy as a central pillar of national power sector development. The policy aims to increase the clean energy mix, sustainably reduce electricity supply costs, and improve system reliability and voltage quality, particularly in West Kalimantan.

Pundi Global Investama President Director Suroso Mitrohardjono expressed his appreciation to PLN UID West Kalimantan for its support, guidance, and supervision throughout the project’s development until it reached commercial operation.

“The memorandum of understanding for this project was first signed in 2017 in Palangka Raya. Our company operates in the palm oil processing sector, giving us access to biomass potential that can be utilized as an environmentally friendly energy source. This 5 MW plant is our inaugural project, and going forward there is potential to expand capacity to 10 MW if operations run smoothly,” Suroso said.
