State-owned electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) signed on Wednesday a contract for the construction of the 4x7 MW Timika coal-fired power plant in Papua with engineering company PT Rekadaya Elektrika.

PLN President Director Nur Pamudji said that the power plant would provide electricity for the people in the Mimika Regency, which hopefully would help accelerate economic development in the region.

He added that PT Rekadaya is expected to complete the project within 19 months, meaning that electricity supply will start in 2014. ?However I challenge Rekadaya to finish the project sooner,? Pamudji said.
